British ‘laid-back’ attitude to debt management
29th November 2007
NEW research today has revealed that *only* one in ten (14%) of Britons asked would notice straight away if £1,000 was taken from their account. This calculated at a national level amounts to an estimated £43 billion in unwatched money, which shows the carelessness of Britons in managing their finances.
Over 20% only check their bank balance once in a month.
Over 25% of Britons said that they cannot sleep at night, worrying over their debts.
One in ten people asked go overdrawn to buy something they wanted but didn’t need, with mid 20 to mid 30 year olds being most prone to this behaviour (15%).
When asked about overspending that could result in debt, the most frequent unneeded spending was on food and drink (52%), 31% luxury goods (cars, watches) and clothing (19%).
Women’s favourite area of excessive spending was food and drink (55%). Their second favourite is luxury items, for example jewellery (24%) and clothing (23%)
Whereas men were most likely to spend more on luxury goods (46%), next food and drink (45%) and clothes (10%)
